Chairwoman Johnson Statement on the President's Budget Request

Statement

On Monday, the Biden Administration released the President's Budget Request for Fiscal Year 2023.

"Strong investments in federal research and development are critical to achieving the progress we hope to see for our nation," said Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX). "I'm pleased to see the President propose increasing vital funding for NSF, including support for international collaborations and climate change research. The President's request for NSF and NIST aligns with what the House seeks to achieve with the American COMPETES Act, including funds for the new NSF directorate, advancing chip manufacturing capabilities, strengthening NIST's role in international standards, and bold investments to broaden participation in STEM. However, I'm less pleased with the proposed funding for DOE's Office of Science, which does not keep pace with the needs of that Office or the authorization we have provided in COMPETES. The Committee will be examining the impacts of that mismatch as we take a closer look at DOE's budget proposal in the coming days.

"Fires continue to burn in the west, and the President is responding to that call to action with support for essential wildfire-related activities at many of our science agencies. Funds to address the growing threat of wildfires and other consequences of the climate crisis across the agencies enable the collaboration and coordinated action that will be needed. I am also extremely proud to see support for efforts to promote equity and justice prioritized in this budget.

"From creating jobs, transitioning to a clean energy future, building a diverse STEM workforce, addressing the climate crisis, pursuing space exploration, and ensuring the U.S. can remain a global leader in innovation, there is much to gain in supporting and preparing our scientific institutions for a strong future. After we have had the opportunity to review the budget request in detail, I look forward to working with my colleagues and the President to ensure our federal research and development programs will have the support they need to succeed."
